When I first arrived in Newcastle (where I still live), the major
employer in the city was the steel mill. It caused a certain amount of
air pollution, which gave the city a bad name. For a while I had a house
where I had a view over non-hilly suburbs towards the steel mill site.

Just after 5 pm each day, you could see a cloud of smoke rise into the
sky. Why at that time? Because the environmental monitoring ended at 5 pm.

The steel mill finally closed when the bottom fell out of the
international steel market.
