This was my thought too.

I wish I did have something that could convince a system that's already
hung to the point where it will not reboot on its own to figure out how to
exit the hang and reboot, but I'm just not that capable.

IIRC, Massimo is using VBox these days.

All that's needed is something on the host that can issue

  VBoxManage controlvm <vm> reset
