Tidy is complaining that things like quotes and such should be written as
&-encoded entitles, but I suspect that this tidy build is not handling
UTF-8 encoding quite right.
The W3C validator claims you should serving the page at
application/xhtml+xml rather than text/html. This might be what is
confusing Safari, although as you say other browsers don't have a problem
with this
