I suspect these days, cmake is the preferred option. I get the feeling that the autoconf support is kept around for legacy systems, like Solaris as well as those that don't wish to learn cmake. mpool.m4 is some of the more readable m4 code I've seen. The mods to check for $target_os should be easy to incorporate. Let me know if they give you trouble.
