I am not Paul. but I will throw in my CAD $0.03.
IMO, 1536 is way too small. I always use 2560, because it always works (for me). 3072 is the max, but some machines will choke on it. To avoid having to guess (and do a lot of experimenting), I just use 2560.
Note that VAL has nothing, at all, to do with physical memory. VAL=2560 works on my antique IBM ThinkPad A22e, with 256 MB of memory, as well as it works on my Asus A88XM-A machine, with 16 GB of memory.
