Hey, Doug...

Surely. As good a place as any.

I have Peter's FTP server running. Mostly, it works very well, however, a while back, I was trying to use it while I was away from home. All I got was a connection timeout. At the time, I had a Friend near Victoria BC give it a try. It worked as expected.

I am pretty sure that it is not a firewall problem, because I was able to use Weasel, on the same computer.

After I got home, I inspected the logs, and it seems that the FTP serve never saw any access attempts. Of course, trying it, when closer to home, always works (even using my cell phone access). Changing timeout settings doesn't make any difference.

How do I find out where the problem is?

Tough one.

Bear in mind that the Zeitgeist is that FTP is evil. It is quite possible that a router along the way blocked your FTP traffic. It may be difficult to determine which intervening hop is blackholing your traffic. tracerte uses UDP, so even specifying the port (tracerte -p 21) may not get you reliable results (timed out for me around hop 12, even specifying a longer wait time).

It may be more effective to set up net2ftp in an Apache instance on your server to provide FTP access in such situations.

I'm open to suggestions from others, and I'll certainly do some more thinking on the subject, and will post back if I get a brainstorm.
