I think that either Lewis's or Steven's explanation will turn out to be the answer, so I have nothing to add to that. I make a lot of stuff, like my past publications, available via anonymous FTP. When the web browsers all colluded in dropping support for FTP, I had to add HTTP access to the anonymous FTP directories. And to support my choir I had to add password-protected HTTP to replace the password-protected FTP. A big nuisance, and possibly even a drop in security, all because a few people decided that FTP was a Bad Thing. I'm also running an SFTP server, but I might have to abandon it because (a) the web browsers, despite their claimed interest in security, won't support it, and (b) the vast majority of the SFTP connections is by people trying to guess passwords. -- Peter Moylan peter@pmoylan.org http://www.pmoylan.org
