Hello Lewis, Chuck and everyone else.
First off is there an archive of this list I can review in case any of my issues have already been addressed?
Thanks to Chuck's suggestion I just got a T61 (6465-CTO) after my T42p died for the 3rd time with a "Fan error" in the 3+ years I've had it. I ordered the T61 with SUSE Linux 10 installed. No windoze. :-) Took me a bit to figure out how to get Boot Manager and a logical partition on it. SUSE used 3 primaries (/,/SWAP, /HOME) taking up the entire 250GB drive. But I was able to move /SWAP to a logical (using OpenSUSE's LiveCD partitioner) and resize /HOME to provide plenty of room for a big extended partition and now even SUSE boots off of BM. eCS 2.0 RC4 installed even with 3GB of RAM (I had seen elsewhere people reporting problems installing eCS with more than 2GB, but that may have been 1.2).
SMP kernel is working. CPU monitor shows 2 CPUs using normally only about 1% each. With RC4's ACPI/APM (3.05) I am only able to get an hour or so from the 6 Cell battery. It doesn't switch to battery optimization when on battery. Is there a version anyone finds better then 3.05? When I tried 3.09 I got hangs on boot (Loading SCREEN01.SYS). I may try the old APM.SYS which worked fine on my T42p.
WSVGA+ display (Intel GMA X3100 GM 965 Mobile Integrated Graphics Controller) works fairly well with SNAP VESA VBE driver at 1680x1050, though there is some brief remnant when dragging windows. SNAP only shows 7616KB of video memory being used. I know nothing about integrated graphics so I have no idea if that can be changed or if it should be for OS/2. I haven't tried Panorama yet.
Wifi (Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG) is working with GenMac from RC4, though on occasion it can't find the router on boot. Not sure if Haven't tried the Intel Gigabit NIC (Wifi (Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG) is working, though on occasion it can't find the router on boot. Haven't tried the Intel Gigabit NIC (1049h 82566MM) yet. Does that work with the Intel Pro/1000 driver?
When I tried RC4's Uniaud it trapped. (ICH8 Family) HD Audio Controller. Chuck said he has sound working with Paul's latest Uniaud driver so I will try that.
Also with the RC4 Amouse driver the trackpoint works as a 2 button mouse only. I can't get the middle button or scrolling to work. And using comet cursor makes the system act like its a 486, with long pauses and slow typing. I will try the IBM Mouse driver to see if that works better. On my T42p I could never get amouse to work right. I miss the middle scrolling with the trackpoint.
A long time ago someone was working on a FireWire driver for OS/2. Anyone have an idea if anything ever came of that? This T61 has a FW port (and an SD/xD/memory stick card slot though eCS doesn't seem to recognize it). No idea what I would use it for other then to try one of the FW drives I have on our Macs. I may try SUSE Linux to see if I can do any video editing with the included Kino app and my Panasonic video camera.
Over all I'm pretty pleased with the T61. Its heavier then the T42p, but it doesn't get any where near as hot as the T42p did. Nice to have the 3 USB ports. I wish I could turn off the touchpad (I hate them) and just use the trackpoint as I did with the T42p. But when I turn it off in the BIOS then SLED won't boot. I need to play with that a bit more. And did I mention no windoze? ;-)
