This may have nothing at all to do with it, but are you sure you have
enough USB definitions in the Config.Sys?  I don't think there is much
downside to over defining.  But, if you don't have enough lots of
strange failures can appear.

Because I also have a Docking Station that has an additional five
ports, I added several more definitions than I would normally have.

Just a FWIW...  Something to check.
