I have not done this, so this advice is worth exactly what you paid for it.  ;)

It is my understanding that Ubuntu comes in several flavors.  The one you want would be whatever
they call an advanced, or alternate version.  The usual version will overwrite IBM boot manager and
wipe out your access to eCS.  That said, it is probably possible to use grub to start eCS but if
you already have eCS installed then why bother adding another layer?

When you install with the alternate Ubuntu you want to make sure you do not choose the easy install
(if that is an option).  The easy install will wipe the boot manager.  What you want to do is tell
Ubuntu to load the boot loader into the / partition (the root partition of the linux formated
partition).  You also need to leave enough drive space to create a swap partition.  I think the
generally recommended size is the same amount as your RAM.  So if you have 1GB ram you would
partition the remaining portion of your disk to freespace minus 1GB.  Then the last GB is available
for Ubuntu install to format for a swap partition.

You disk *might* look something like this:

IBM Boot MGR.
eCS
Ubuntu partition (including grub located here)
Swap partition

The important part is that you force grub to install in the Ubuntu root.

Most (but not Ubuntu) linux distro's have a custom (or advanced) install which is necessary to
select to get the option to put the boot loader into the root partition used by the distro.  But
Ubuntu has a seperate distro that you have to download in order to get this functionality.
