??: "eCS ThinkPad T60/61 Mailing List" <ecs-t6x@2rosenthals.com>

Hi Lewis,

It's like meeting an old friend!

I haven't been hacking OS/2 for a few years, but recently had a need to set up a music system in a bar and thought my old Thinkpad 600 should do the trick so installed Warp CP2 hoping that everything would work fine but had forgotten what a nightmare audio drivers can be on OS/2 and can't get any sound out of my laptop - there seem to be too many options available and different websites tell me I have different audio chipset. Is there any way to actually tell what I do have installed?

As for USB - I've never had this working on OS/2 - I've followed numerous guides but just can't get the hang of it. All I want is to  access a 2GB USB stick which has a few MP3s on it but there seem to be sooooo many USB-related drivers in config.sys

I've looked at this link

http://www.os2warp.be/index2.php?name=usbreview

but I have no idea if my USB subsystem is EHCI, OHCI or UHCI and don't know whether I should expect things to work eventually.

Things were never simple on OS/2...

It is *so* good to see that you're still around and still hacking OS/2, John. I'd noticed your absence on the usual lists for sometime, and was a bit concerned that you had suffered some health issues or some such...
Is it an appropriate place to ask questions about Thinkpad 600's? I have a couple which are over 10 years old which I want to use primarily as MP3 players, but can't get sound to work and would also like to know if there is any chance of using a 4GB pen drive with them.

Actually, this list is mainly for the newer models which share much of the same ACPI, HDA, and networking issues. There are a few of us here who have had experience with machines of the 600's vintage, but truthfully, you're likely to get a better response on the notebook2 http://groups.yahoo.com/group/nb2discuss/) or eCS Technical (http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/eCS-Technical/) lists on Yahoo, methinks.

That said, as traffic here has been light, I don't think any of us would mind a little OT discussion.

First issue: Sound on the 600. Which driver are you using? As the 600 has fairly good OS/2 support, I would probably opt for the driver from IBM:

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=BBOD-3HJL6Y

(The device Driver Matrix for the 600 series is here, BTW:

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=DSHY-3TLQ2L

Next issue: 4GB pen drive should be no problem. I use a 4GB Sandisk Cruzer as my "regular" stick; there are other makes & models which perform better. This has been rather well discussed on the DFSee list: http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/dfsee-support/ . Essentially, as OS/2 is limited to FAT16 for large floppy devices, you'll want to configure the stick as a removable hard drive (i.e., put a partition table on it with at leats one partition). If you want to exchange data with Window systems, the FAT32 driver is probably the best way to go, but if you'll only be using it for OS/2/eCS, then whatever suits (HPFS or JFS) should be fine. If you do decide to use FAT32, you can do the whole setup with DFSee under OS/2, including formatting the stick, which is quite handy.
