Essentially, you need to track down the correct cells to replace the ones you have, pry open the case (usually glued together), schnipp the leads, solder the new ones, and seal the case again; pretty much as one might expect. It seems to be more tedium than anything else, as they're not manufactured with re-manning in mind (the leads usually don't easily detach, and the cases can be a pain to separate). But at least you end up with the original electronics, and not that dopey warning message that some body part will fall off since you're not using an "official" battery. ;-)
Jon, you mihgt want to give this a go on your dead unit, just to see if it's worthwhile (I may do so on one of mine).
Lewis:
Thanks for the links, I'll look them over after the dust around here settles.
FWIW, I did check with the local Batteries Plus, who have rebuilt calculator batteries, etc. for me in the past. They said they couldn't do a laptop battery. Maybe I'll know more after I look at those links.
I'll bet your working until midnight tonight! ;-)Actually, most of the shouting and weeping ends the day before. On the 15th, the stragglers are usually just picking up, and a few are dropping off stuff to calculate extensions <sigh>...
