Subject: How to create utmp to track system vitals, or What's up with uptime?

uptime depends upon utmp (or similar, depending upon platform). On *nix,
init creates/updates /var/run/utmp (usually) and then adds other information
as the system runs (logins, etc.).

We have an uptime port. Unfortunately, though, without utmp, uptime is
utterly useless. So, what am I missing to "fake" an init run through
inittab? And finally, if this functionality does exist, is it documented
anywhere?

TIA
