Symlinks are only supported by programs linked against kLIBC as they're implemented at the libc level so as Andy said, there is ash and dash installed by RPM/YUM and also later [pd]ksh and mksh on Hobbes. Officially perl used to require [pdk]sh as its shell.
Generally things are only tested with ash and/or dash, which are tuned for the YUM/RPM environment.
As Andy said, configure checks the environment first, so AWK=gawk.exe, here for Mozilla, PYTHON=python.exe etc.
Btw, we don't really have a good port of bash, some of the old ones aren't too bad but they're still buggy.
