As it turns out, if I open the settings dialog, and close it with
*Cancel*, then open taskbar menu again, two things are visible in the
"cancel" 1 and 2 screenshots I am attaching [be careful with this, I can
only reproduce it the first time per boot cycle]:

1) lSwitcher fiddles with the Desktop work area: see the background has
moved a bit back up.
I don't see what you are talking about here. The screenshot looks fine and is identical
in desktop spacing to screenshot 2.
2) the popup menu is bolded in the "2" screenshot, which reminds me: the
thinner font menu in the first one does *not* fit in with the rest of
the system.
This I see and will try to reproduce. Thanks
