Well, heck, it probably would work, at that. In fact, it is certainly possible to log into NetWare from a VPC session booted to W2K and running the latest Win32 client. However, I'm wondering if we wouldn't lose some performance edge that way. As it stands, I have yet to see a Windows box approach the file transfer speed I get with OS/2 over IPX, even when the Win box is running IP (the IPX stack on NetWare has been left rather stagnant since NPC no longer is protocol-bound to it; by their own admission, they would like to see everyone move off of IPX, so they have spent very little time keeping up with performance enhancements).

A true, 32-bit, multi-threaded OS/2 client, capable of pure-IP connections to multiple trees with a real NDPS implementation would be far superior IMO to an Odin-enabled Win32 package (are Odin apps even multi-threaded? I don't think so; I think that Odin itself runs in one thread and executes everything within that thread, instead of spawning new ones).

For OS/2 to survive (if this is what we call it; many prefer to call it "existing" or "remaining on life support") in a NetWare environment in particular, we really need something over a Windows box. Right now, that's performance.

Hi Lewis

You know, I hate to say it but I wonder if a win32 port of the client, such as we have seen  eg:Openoffice, Adobe Acrobat would suffice. You know.... once I got NWadmin32 up and running using ODIN, the client was too old obviously but it did come up. It took a bit to pull the right files from the public and client but I got it to come up in eCS 1.0. I was just playing around to see if I could even do that.

Thanks, Vaughn. I think that I'll revisit this situation once I'm through this week (end of tax season). The best would perhaps be to set up a poll on my site and publicize it on the usual channels. Once that's done, and we have at least some barometer for how many licenses we could possibly sell, the next step would be get a fair estimate of the cost involved in developing the client, and to approach Novell with a proposal (we need at least some of the source code to the existing client and perhaps a good portion of the code for the Win32 client).

Once I can get my head clear to think straight, I'll start scripting the poll, and kick it around here for feedback before posting it.

Hi Lewis

I agree about purchasing a client, it seems that, that would be the only way to get a project going for a pure IP client and maybe some support for NDPS printing. With the updated client then there is no reason why one can totally use eCS to manage a Novell server utilizing Console one...etc..

Using ProSoft as a model for costing would be I think feasable. We have MAC's in our School division and are using ProSofts Novell client.

Again a number count of who would commit would be a good indication of whether to go forward or ....whatever... You can count me in

I have no information on this. I briefy discussed the need/desire for one at Warpstock San Francisco last October, but that was about it. That said, if we could get enough people to commit real $$ in terms of promises to pay licensing fees, I'm sure that the talent exists to create an updated client. Look at the latest Mac clients from ProSoft Engineering: far superior to any of the previous Novell offerings, both in terms of performance and feature set.
