If that 'refuses to work' is indeed in 4GB, and this
is Windows-XP, I am not that surprised ...

When Windows-XP came out a few years ago, I have tried that too,
and allthough eventaully I got it to boot/work OK, it VERY quickly
filled up the partition to the point it would not work reliably anymore.

I have found that for a Windows-XP that is actually USED over a longer period,
something like 6GB is about the minimum, unless you do a lot of tweaking and
removing unneeded stuff, or move lots of data to other partitions ...
