Can anyone suggest/recommend a device to detect the presence of public
WiFi-nets so that it is not necessary to turn on the computer and boot
in order to find out if there are any hotspots nearby?

The ideal device should be small, have a display that shows the name(s)
of the available nets if any found, and be cheap...

The original Kensington WiFinder got lousy reviews when it first came out:

However, there is a newer revision available. The WiFi Finder Plus ( http://us.kensington.com/html/5703.html ) seems to be a better gizmo than its predecessor:

Hi  Lewis,

This detector like the cheap and ceerful ($6-$7) dollar ones I can get here just has led indicators, there's no SSID display that the original poster is looking for. Interesting that the kensington also detects bluetooth - not sure what you would need that for however.

Cheers/2
