Someone mentioned a WiFi enabled phone - that could be the most cost effective solution to get this capability. I've sent off for a $6 detector, just to see how good they are - but I then will need to turn on my (ASUS EeePC) mini-laptop to see if connection is actually possible - but at least the detector will have taken care of the first check whether any WiFi is available in the area at all.
