Agreed - and I think the display of the available SSIDs (and ideally whether they are encrypted or not) is a key requirement.

Someone mentioned a WiFi enabled phone - that could be the most cost effective solution to get this capability.

I've sent off for a $6 detector, just to see how good they are - but I then will need to turn on my (ASUS EeePC) mini-laptop to see if connection is actually possible - but at least the detector will have taken care of the first check whether any WiFi is available in the area at all.

A device that indicates the presence of a hotspot is useful but not as
useful as a pocket device that allows you to scroll through SSIDs so I
can easily check that e.g. a hotspot company is offering service where
I am presently situated.

Can anyone suggest/recommend a device to detect the presence of public
WiFi-nets so that it is not necessary to turn on the computer and boot
in order to find out if there are any hotspots nearby?

The ideal device should be small, have a display that shows the name(s)
of the available nets if any found, and be cheap...

Any suggestions?  Thanks.

I've seen such devices advertised, but the ones I saw were not cheap.

Hmm, I just checked the local eBAY website - $6-$7 for detectors that ONLY indicate signal present and strength. I think you're going to need an expensive device such as made by Fluke and other comapnies to be able to indicate the SSID.
