A device that indicates the presence of a hotspot is useful but not as
useful as a pocket device that allows you to scroll through SSIDs so I
can easily check that e.g. a hotspot company is offering service where
I am presently situated.

I've seen such devices advertised, but the ones I saw were not cheap.

Hmm, I just checked the local eBAY website - $6-$7 for detectors that ONLY indicate signal present and strength. I think you're going to need an expensive device such as made by Fluke and other comapnies to be able to indicate the SSID.
