Carl, I have a TP43 with the fingerprint reader.  I have no idea
what its operational mode is since it works only before the boot
menu options are displayed.  It's performance is inconsistent;
but if I insist and keep at it, eventually it works and gets me
to the boot menu.  I have no idea how this is affected by USB.
