I don't find in the Verizon forum FAQ anything about windows being required. I do note
that the firmware on some of thier supplied devices may not be up to date and that you may

Some FIOS areas (NJ is one) not PPoE but plain DHCP service, but that's the router's
problem. And I would say that either the router they are using is not properly configured
to be DHCP to the LAN or is not acting as a NAT/DHCP device.
