Sorry for misleading anyone, I think I read once that it ought to be possible
but it is like you said, one or the other.
Anyway, in desperation I rebooted the sparc and it made no difference so I
deleted the dhcp config and recreated it and it is all working fine. No idea
what had got screwed on the sparc but either interface will now work on the
subnet.
