Quick ref, in case you didn't make it to Jeroen's helpful link: A captive portal is a web page where users are redirected on managed Wi-Fi LANs. From there, they are able to authenticate or at least are presented with terms of use before being permitted to proceed elsewhere. It's good practice when traveling, before checking your email, to open a browser window first. This way, if there is a captive portal, you'll have a chance to authenticate. If you try fetching your mail, you may indeed be blocked, and not be able to figure out why.

BTW, Provo, Utah is absolutely gorgeous country. (I know your penchant for postcards; I'll make a point of picking up a couple nice ones for you.) I got into Salt Lake City last night, picked up my rental, and drove the 40+ miles down to Provo. This morning, I had to be at Novell at 7am for breakfast, and it was still dark. Around lunchtime, I walked out to my car to get some stuff from the trunk, turned around, and saw - for the first time - the majestic white mountains which seem to act as sentinels to the city. I just stood there, with my jaw agape. What a time to only have my dopey cell phone camera with me...

There is FREE Wi-Fi, and I connected immediately, thanks to XWLAN's Public hotspot feature (not even a captive portal here, which is kind of odd).
