Hi, Hakan, and apologies for the late follow-up, here...

Wi-Fi issues aside at this point (though I believe you may find that GenMAC 1.0 will handle the 2200 card; there have been some issues of which I've heard with instability on this chipset, but these have been receiving some attention), the ThinkPad T42 itself is a nice machine, and eCS 1.2 should install on it quite easily.

As Stan pointed out, 4200 is the norm for 2.5" drives, with 5400 bringing more performance (the difference is indeed noticeable). The 60GB 7200RPM Hitachi Travelstar (which I use) is not only lightning fast (10ms avg seek) - though not as strikingly fast in contrast to the 5400RPM models as the 5400's are to the 4200's - but also whisper quiet and well shock-rated.

Specs on the Travelstar 7K60 can be found here:

That said, what I would look to purchase is a T42 similar to what you describe, but probably look for the smallest drive you can find (40, I think) at 4200RPM, then swap that out for the drive you really want.

BTW (and this is to everyone here), I have some stock on UltraBay Slim (T4x-series) 2nd HDD adapters (IBM refurb) at good prices: $44 each + shipping. [/end of shameless plug] ;-)

Fellow members,

Would a T42 ThinkPad with the following specs run OS/2/eCS?
* Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG 802.11b/g (or for $30 extra, a LAN
Mini-PC Adapter II for 802.11a/b/g)
* ATI Mobility FireGL T2 Graphics 1600 x 1200 UXGA+ IPS

As a sidenote, the machine seems to be offered with a 80Gb /4200 rpm/
hard drive...  Seems very slow to me?

Follow-on question: in order to be able to back up drive contents to an
external SCSI tape backup, what external expansion unit would be best? (1) ThinkPad Dock II, (2) ThinkPad Mini-Dock, (3) ThinkPad Port
Replicator II, or (4) Targus Mobile Docking Station with Ethernet?

TIA.

Hakan
