This survey functionality is really a matter for the driver to do; XWLAN presents the information to the user in a formatted display. What this means is that users of older drivers (e.g., the Cisco 340/350 and probably IBMPRISM and GENPRISM) will still not be able to get a survey of available Wi-Fi networks. I will be talking at Warpstock about some of the new features ahead of us with XWLAN and GenMAC (okay, I asked for it; but please, everyone, let's start a new thread for arguing the pros and cons of delayed beta releases and closed alpha testing, please!). I will post some of that info here - after Warpstock - for discussion.
