This sounds like the 'local geek' is using something like wifi to allow
everyone access to a single high speed connection. Almost like using your
wireless card to tap into your neighbours lan+dsl system.

professor's adventures in making parabolic antennae for usb wifi dongles
and talking to live access points over amazing distances.
