The 6000 series integrated transceivers from Direc PC are self contained, and indeed perform the same TCP -> BST translation for the uplink which was formerly d
one in software under Windows. I have found this latest generation of hardware to be extremely reliable (as reliable as satellite can be - it's still subject to
sunspots & weather patterns). The 6000 transceiver patches into a broadband router just like a cable box or DSL bridge.

Alternatively, I have availability of a satellite offering from SES Americom which is also self-contained.

Pricing for either of these options is about $80 per month.

BTW, the 6000 series boxes have been available since at least early 2004...

It is possible to get wireless internet service with Verizon Wireless, Mark Abramowitz does this with his laptop, I think it's like $89/mo. He did a presentation for SCOUG a while back.  
     

I'll look to see if that may be an option... however, I am likely to be about 20Mi. east of Cheyenne Wy.  If you check that on a map it is in the middle of nowhere.  There isn't enough people to warrant anyone to offer a service I am afraid.
