I don't know the name of the service, which is only to ISP anyway, but my
sister lives pretty far out in the woods. Like beyond the reach of electricity,
although she does have telephone.
A geeky friend of hers who lives on a mountaintop, bought the service, which is
a high speed (possibly microwave?) service. He resells it and beams it down to
her house, about 3/4 mile over a deep ravine. She's getting about 1.5 Mb/s both
up and down. He's got most of people within a mile and a half hooked up. That
isn't very many people. You need direct line of site from his antenna to your
antenna, then it goes to a typical router, so it doesn't matter what Operating
system you use after that.
Once you've moved, ask around. Try to find the local geek.
Oh, you're probably wondering why she needs a computer if she has no
electricity. She's got 10 huge solar arrays attached to a bank of surplus Navy
submarine deep-cycle batteries and an inverter. City people like me will never
understand...
