Lewis, please tell them how electronic tax returns are filed.

:-)  Interestingly enough, we don't handle electronic filings in our office. The rules for submission are that accounting firms with non-CPA ownership (i.e., any firm wherein at least one of the owners having greater than a certain minuscule participation) must subject themselves to some oddball requirements. As an example, while my brother is an Enrolled Agent (having passed an IRS-designed and administered exam, which qualifies him to practice before them <all hail the mighty Service>), I am not. Therefor, I must either pass the exam (I came close a couple years ago, but you need to pass at least two of the four parts on the first run; I passed one, and was within a couple points on the second), or be fingerprinted. Most of you on this list know what a privacy freak I am, and so I flatly refuse to be fingerprinted like a common thief. Ergo, Rosenthal & Rosenthal, LLC doesn't do electronic filings. Remarkably <snide grin>, we haven't lost any clients over this, and only a couple actually ask us about electronic filing each year. One day, when the there's a sea change at the Service, we may yet do them. Until then, trees are an endangered species around our offices from January through April, and the LaserJet eats well.

On a matter of principle, I agree with Stu. This is a representative republic (not a democracy, as some mistakenly refer to it). The best place to lodge complaints about government inadequacy is with our representatives, though I highly doubt that the Honorable Senators Schumer or Clinton would listen to me (particularly if they knew how far to the other side of the aisle I sit in relation to them...). The House of Representatives would be the best place to start: http://www.house.gov/writerep/.

Meanwhile, I'll still kill a few trees and send paper mail to the Copyright Office. Hmmm... Let's see: five sheets, assuming I can get it to fit on one page, plus an envelope, probably brings me over the 2oz mark. So, that's some extra postage to the US - oh, that's right, the "private company" which has the monopoly on first class mail isn't a "government" entity anymore...right... Sounds like a revenue-generating plan, if you ask me. ;-)
