First, for everyone on this list who attended and/or presented at the Developer's Workshop, and especially to you, Robert, my heartfelt thanks and congratulations for a thoroughly enjoyable weekend. I had a blast... Next, and more on topic here (though for everyone's thoughts, events like the Developer's Workshop and the various Warpstocks - Warpstock Czech Republic is coming up soon, BTW; see http://felis.kky.vslib.cz/CZECH_WARPSTOCK_2005/ for details! - won't be around forever without support for the community; whether it be the developer community, as we had this weekend, or the user and vendor communities whom we host at Warpstock...show your support: http://www.warpstock.net/), I had a heck of a time connecting to the hotel Wi-Fi, and was about to blame OS/2 (I was even having some difficulty at the University this afternoon, and thought it was a low-level DHCP issue), when I finally hit upon the problem: IPv6 support is enabled by default in Mozilla and Firefox. I picked up on a couple links when I finally figured out what was going on and got myself connected: http://forums.techguy.org/history/t-354959.html http://cruftbox.com/blog/archives/001096.html http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/archive/30/2004/10/4/236026 In brief: In prefs.js (recent builds of Mozilla and Firefox), you will find the following preference set to false by default: network.dns.disableIPv6 Normally, this should cause us no trouble on OS/2, as we do not support IPv6. However, while I was able to do simple DNS lookups from the command line, using nslookup and dig connected to the default Vodafone (that's who supplies the hotspot here at the Mercure Newa Dresden, and it runs on a Cisco backbone which is apparently IPv6 capable - no wonder the addressing looked odd from IPv4 standards) server and received fairly quick results, attempting to browse pages - even within the captive portal - proved problematic. POP3 and SMTP were all but impossible. In desperation, I changed my resolv2 to point to a couple root servers on the net, and restarted Mozilla. Immediately, I was able to browse, and download and send outgoing mail. A little googling, a change of the prefs.js, a browser restart, and finally an interface (re)configure from XWLAN (released and renewed the DHCP params), and I was right on line again - using the default Vodafone DNS address.
