Hey, that's very interesting, Howard. So the play-for-free model is all but gone across the pond, eh? Yes, quite interesting. Thanks.
[To everyone]: Remember that the participation in this is purely voluntary, i.e., just like instant messaging. One does not have to allow one's avatar to be plastered on the screen for all to see, nor does one have to make an exclusive choice. As an example, one day, I may feel more sociable than the next, so one day I turn it on, and the other I don't. Likewise, if I want to ignore certain people, I would want to have a way to never display their avatars on my desktop.
Yes, perhaps we should have some sort of impromptu roundtable at Warpstock on this sort of thing. I, for one, would find it fascinating (and it's so refreshing to take a break from the technology all the time!).

Lewis,
I can see it working in places where being there is somewhat social, like Students' cafeteria, or at conferences (Warpstock?) but in any random coffee shop most people aren't there to meet others, but to get away from the hurly-burly outside, so cocoon themselves in their own little bubble with their laptop (hence the "oblivious" comment). Consequently I can't see Starbuck's wanting it. I can see the "Adult entertainment" industry finding a way to exploit it, however!
Incidentally, over here free-access hotspots have pretty-much disappeared, some of them completely, others have gone to pay-per-minute, and the charges aren't insignificant! Having a cup of coffee and surfing the net can cost twice as much as having a cup of coffee and just sitting there...
Cheers,
Howard Winter
