Lewis,
I can see it working in places where being there is somewhat social, like Students' cafeteria, or at
conferences (Warpstock?) but in any random coffee shop most people aren't there to meet others, but to get
away from the hurly-burly outside, so cocoon themselves in their own little bubble with their laptop (hence
the "oblivious" comment). Consequently I can't see Starbuck's wanting it. I can see the "Adult
entertainment" industry finding a way to exploit it, however!
Incidentally, over here free-access hotspots have pretty-much disappeared, some of them completely, others
have gone to pay-per-minute, and the charges aren't insignificant! Having a cup of coffee and surfing the net
can cost twice as much as having a cup of coffee and just sitting there...
