NAT isn't the best security, but it does make it possible for some protection against DoS attacks and such which can be handled by most routers. Do you pay extra for the IP addresses?
Your ADSL router can provide some security for your computers and allow you to share resources without exposing them to the web in general.
I have my SMC setup to send email when it's being attacked, I don't publish my IP, but I get at least one message a day about attacks of one kind or another. Even OS/2 can be brought down by DoS attacks, used as an illegal mail relay, etc.
