When we were in Italy in June 2004, we were able to buy a pre-paid card (5 Euro for 1 hr from memory) from the hotel lobby that could be used anywhere that network had access points. The network was one of the Italian telco's as I recall.
I presume the card had a userid/password to use to login with when connecting to the provider?

Also in Rome near the Trevi fountain we found a little tourist office with Internet access where we plugged the laptop in via ethernet for 2 Euro per hour.
I won't be taking my laptop. I'll be using my Palm LifeDrive, which has wifi, email, and browser capabilities.
Florence/Venice I don't remember if we got access or not.
