IBM (now ThinkVantage) Rescue and Recovery never worked right for me 
through the 2.x versions. A couple of months ago I installed the new 
Software Installer program from Lenovo, the IBM predecessor of which was 
less than thorough. Software Installer searches your computer for 
Thinkpad related software and offers to update those if you choose to do 
so. I let it have its way with my A31, after completely backing up with 
Acronis TruImage. When it was done, not only was the Intel LAN driver, 
that the IBM Installer could never get to load, now installed and 
working, but I had been provided with a 3.x version of Rescue and 
Recover. This version actually works and is a lot more flexible that the 
previous generations, too.

My point is only this: Don't automatically write off Lenovo. After all, 
as you point out further down in your reply, IBM has shown the OS/2 
community little to be happy about for many years. They seemed to be 
letting their PC division languish as their interest (read 
profitability) waned.

Sorry to hear that. I don't have any real suggestions for that. Maybe a 
bios hack? Maybe IBM didn't actually author the T41 bios. If it was a 
stealth Phoenix, for example, you might be able to purchase a new, less 
restrictive one, from them.

No, Just look under the hood of Windows 2003.

Just thought it might be of interest. Last I checked, this was an OS/2 
list, not the exclusive domain of eCSers. Anyway, I have seen it 
proposed in OS/2 groups in the past that NT, and therefore its children, 
descended from OS/2. I now have what I believe to be trustworthy 
information that the DEC story is the real one. We have a LOT (including 
Paul Allen) of Microsoft "graduates" here in Ashland. (Myself NOT included)
