that came with the A31 for Windows 2K would not recognize it and actually prevented the Intel software from working. After I removed the IBM wireless networking support software and reinstalled the Intel software, the 2200b/g worked fine.

This tells me that the "lockout" was built into the supporting software, rather than the bios.

On your A31 then, not on my TP41, as the error comes at the bios post,  when there is no "supporting software" around as you sure are aware of.

Regarding Lenovo, they have actually fixed long standing bugs in some of the IBM add on Windows software.

Really?

I've (stupid me) purchased a TP43 last week, where at boot the bios complains it can't handle a 80 gig drive. Or even a not Hitachi 40 Gig drive. Doesn't look like an improvement to me.

In that respect, things have improved.

Care to reveal which "improvements" you are talking about?

IBM (now ThinkVantage) Rescue and Recovery never worked right for me through the 2.x versions. A couple of months ago I installed the new Software Installer program from Lenovo, the IBM predecessor of which was less than thorough. Software Installer searches your computer for Thinkpad related software and offers to update those if you choose to do so. I let it have its way with my A31, after completely backing up with Acronis TruImage. When it was done, not only was the Intel LAN driver, that the IBM Installer could never get to load, now installed and working, but I had been provided with a 3.x version of Rescue and Recover. This version actually works and is a lot more flexible that the previous generations, too.

My point is only this: Don't automatically write off Lenovo. After all, as you point out further down in your reply, IBM has shown the OS/2 community little to be happy about for many years. They seemed to be letting their PC division languish as their interest (read profitability) waned.

However, I suspect that they will not provide ANY OS/2 support, or even sympathy, since they will most likely feel no trace of lingering responsibility.

Even IBM doesn't show any trace of lingering responsibility, why should the new owner, Lenovo, doing the opposite?

I am waiting for the fallout with GenMac to stop before I reinstall OS/2 on the A31 because I need the wireless networking to function or it will be unusable.

You are still lucky with your A31, as from the TP41 on models are crippled according to their type number.

Sorry to hear that. I don't have any real suggestions for that. Maybe a bios hack? Maybe IBM didn't actually author the T41 bios. If it was a stealth Phoenix, for example, you might be able to purchase a new, less restrictive one, from them.

Unrelated P.S.
Last week the person who developed the memory management for Windows NT

Windows NT!? Isn't that a thinghy from the past century???

No, Just look under the hood of Windows 2003.

was not happy when Gates and Balmer came in and ordered them to make Windows run on top of it. That was not in the original definition.

So, what's in for eCS in this old story?

Just thought it might be of interest. Last I checked, this was an OS/2 list, not the exclusive domain of eCSers. Anyway, I have seen it proposed in OS/2 groups in the past that NT, and therefore its children, descended from OS/2. I now have what I believe to be trustworthy information that the DEC story is the real one. We have a LOT (including Paul Allen) of Microsoft "graduates" here in Ashland. (Myself NOT included)
