Yes it can't be the hardware, but this machine and card worked together at
my other access point in Boston two days ago

I don't know if this is at all related as the symptoms are almost opposite but I had a case where I had 100% signal strength but no connectivity but then connected to someone else's open AP with only about 20% signal strength and was able to download the drivers (this was on the WINXP side) and reinstall them and then was able to connect to my AP that was right next to the machine.
