I take it that you have a desktop system here? The one wireless desktop I have is using the Netgear MA-311 (I think) PCI Card with the IBM Prism driver (available on ecomstation.com) which includes the WifiState program for up to 4 profiles. If this is a desktop and you are only connecting to one AP you don't really need to use WifiState.
Why would we advise to use 11b is there is available 11g? Wireless PCI cards 11g cost less than 30 euro, and are currently vailable (11b is finished as you well are aware of):
3com/SKnet Gigabit
Dlink DWL-G520+
And no doubt with genmac version 1.5 there will be more (I've purchased myself 2 copies of Dlink DWL-G520+ last week).
In respect to laptops too, I would strongly advise to purchase anything 11b now.
