I think they are trying (hard) to tell you that they don't have a card like
yours, and they are not willing to give directions about something they don't
know, else they would give them. The suggestion about Windows was clearly
explained as a possible way for you to find out for yourself what to do about
this unfamiliar card; if you can't do that because you don't have a Windows
installation, the suggestion doesn't work for you; there isn't any implication
about what time has come.

These people are incredibly patient (so they have been with me). Still, the
idea of shucking you off onto Windows may have crossed their minds.

I have an alternate suggestion that may be more achievable: Even though it is
against your principles, install the standalone XWLAN utility **TEMPORARILY**
and go through the configuration using it. That may make clear what you would
have to do were you living in a pre-XWLAN era. Armed with that knowledge, you
can return to configure your system in the way that you prefer.

Why fight it? You are being given tools, which you can use in whatever way is
appropriate for you and your system. To paraphrase a previous contribution:
[decide how you want to do it, and] just do it".
