OK, I an connected.  Ignorance is hell.  Of all the things I COULD have done, I fumbled until I did what I NEEDED to do.

The sound apparently was it trying to connect but not having access to that network.  I managed to create a profile with the proper info and all seems to be well.

Help did get me going in the right direction.  I am going to try to create a small check list for this.  There are many parts of setting up a fresh OS installation that we don't much understand, but are able to do because system install leads us by the hand.  WiFi setup does not seem to be one of those things.
