The sound apparently was it trying to connect but not having access to that network. I managed to create a profile with the proper info and all seems to be well.
And then I unplugged the power cord and walked out to my van to do diagnostics. When I got there the screen was black. A call to Fujitsu and their repair shop got me the consensus that the MB died.
Oh well.
