Agere is what used to be the Microelectronics group of Bell Labs, the
people that brought the world things like the transitor and the integrated
circuit. It was spun off in 2000 from Lucent Technologies (which was spun
off itself from AT&T when that monopoly was broken up). It is based in
Allentown, PA, about 35 minutes from my home. They make the widely
popular Orinoco chipset that many wireless cards were based on.
