This is the sort of thing I was thinking of - a sort of router/gateway acting as a superserver to an internal network with a real IP address on one side and an internal IP address on the other. Using an internal IP network you wouldn't need a firewall and NAT on every machine, all clients would access the Internet via a proxy or socks server on the gateway machine which could also act as an imap mail server.
