802.11b is so slow and obsolete to be quite useless nowadays...
The situation is really different in Germany. 11B is fast here and also useful. I own an ARtem 11b card and have no problem connecting with it to any kind of network.
In fact, as Lewis explained to me in Denver, all the clients of an AP switch from the "fast" 11G to the "slow" 11B as soon as there is ONE 11B client in the network!
There are milions of Centrino laptops out there that were all 11b until a year or so ago. So the chance to be on a network with only 11G clients is close to zero. (at least in public places, not talking about your home network!)

The only problem I see is the availability of 11B cards. However, there are ways to purchase them.

Regards,

Robert
