For network messaging, the relevant names are the NetBIOS/NetBEUI names of
the machines and the users. The name you enter to logon to the LAN is a
user. The machine itself has a separate name.

The TCP/IP name is machine.domain1.comain2.top. On most setups, you can

set hostname=machinename

in config.sys and your ISP will automatically fill in the rest of the domain
stuff when relevant.

So about the only way to get as close to consistent as is possible is to set
the NetBIOS/NetBEUI machine name as the TCP/IP hostname in config.sys. You
might want to go the whole nine yards and

SET HOSTNAME=machinename
SET USE_HOSTS_FIRST=1
SET USER=username

where username is your NetBIOS/NetBEUI user name.

An alternative is to set machinename as a nickname for your TCP/IP machine
name in your HOSTS file (usually in MPTN\ETC, actually in %ETC%), as in

127.0.0.1  localhost  lo Warp3     #comment

format:
IP number  fully qualified dotted domain name  nickname(s)  #comment(if any)

"localhost" is a reserved name for 127.0.0.1; normally, it'd look more like
the one in the URL below (www.math.wichita.edu). This example has two
nicknames for localhost (the default loopback interface): "lo" and "Warp3".
You may have as many as you wish, subject to a 255 char line length limit.
You may omit the second field (localhost in the example), in which case the
next thing found on the line is a nickname. You may not omit the IP number.

There are probably more rules, but those are the ones I had to learn to get
my setup working.
