No, MAC address filtering is a different issue entirely. Basically, consider a wireless network which is not isolated; e.g., a network coexisting with other networks. A client associates with a given AP, receives a DHCP address (for the purposes of this argument), and begins its session. Another client associates with a different AP, and begins its conversation. AP1 pretty much ignores traffic on the other conversation as it is not destined to it (i.e., Client2 did not associate with it). This is true even if both clients are similarly addressed (e.g., both AP's use out-of-the-box addressing schemes, such as 192.168.1.x).

APs which work efficiently will completely drop packets passing by which are from unassociated clients. Other AP's will listen to all traffic, and simply pass it through. I have no idea which ones do one or the other; at this point, this appears to be a trial and error sort of thing. Perhaps we should start reporting such issues to Jonas for the CHL.

A follow-up to my last reply. At Warpstock this morning, I'm sitting next to Oliver Stein from Innotek, and just asked him about this issue. Here's a more exact answer:

In order for Vswitch to work with Wi-Fi, two things need to happen: The driver for the card must support promiscuous mode (Jens' drivers do, others may not); and the access point must be able to work inefficiently, meaning, it must not discard packets signed with a different MAC address than the Wi-Fi NIC of the client; many AP's - for the sake of efficiency and security - simply discard such packets.

Which AP are you using?

Just jumping into the conversation ...

I use the IBM PCCard wireless, with Jen's drivers (RC3), so the first condition is met. I have an SMC 2804WBR wireless router. Does the latter work "inefficiently". It does have an option to restrict signons to specified MACs, and I leave that configured, but that I think is not quite the same issue.
