I've finally gotten the hang of wi-fi in WinXP Pro and determined that the easiest way is set up my "home portal" with the encryption disabled and broadcasting the SSID in the clear. Once the connection is made, I create the IBM Access Connections profile and on the wireless settings page I access the Windows connection settings, disable the "Let Windows control the connection" and save those settings and then finally save the profile. Then if you launch the wireless combo card icon you can set the encryption there and you'll need to simultaneously set the "home portal" to enable encryption, best if you already have the ethernet connection established and can use it to set the portals settings from the notebook. Once you get the encryption going, you can then disable the broadcasting of the SSID and you should be done. I also have the adapters disable themselves when I switch connections. Works a treat.

Now if I could only get back to my previous configuration where all my machines could see each other. I don't know why XP has to be so hard to configure for this to occur. I've been beating my forehead against this wall now for too long. I've finally resorted to rejoining our local users group to take some evening courses where I can bring my notebook to have the gurus perform their magic while I watch and learn. <G>
