Can you ping the hardwired box? The LAN side of your router? The WAN side? Try an ifconfig lan0 from the prompt, and make sure that you do indeed have your static IP and subnet mask showing. try pinging the local workstation, both through the loopback and the static address you've set. These should help us determine where the problem lies. Finally, one more thought: Is your wired ethernet controller in the A31 configured?
