As with so many "things web," it's hard to nail down to a succinct, all-encompassing definition. Think of it as a collection of journals or loosely-threaded conversations (a "story," which is created under a certain "topic," which is then followed by comments by the readers. It's a cousin to the mailing list (not "the" as in "this mailing list," but rather, "the" as in the genre).
